September 15th 2007 - - -Ocean Salmon is still pretty good. But you have to travel about seven miles or so south to get your fish. Some days are better than others. Seems like every time there is a little weather front coming in it scatters the fish for a day or two. But over all, the Ocean Salmon has been very good. As for the river, it has definitely been an on and off fishery. Still some nice fish in the river. If you can find them. The better bite has been on the Washington side on the In coming tide. And the Oregon side on the ebb. Soon there will be no fresh bait available. But, we'll still have a full line of frozen product on hand.
September 4th 2007 - - Yesterday was the last day in the river to retain Chinook. So from here on out it's a Coho only fishery. You can still keep two fish per day. There was a very good bite in the river yesterday. From the bridge down to Hammond. It was later in the afternoon that the bite came alive. Real nice Chinook and Coho. Too bad we can't keep the Chinook today. The better bite has been on fresh bait rather than spinners. Although, a few are using them and catching fish. The Ocean Salmon is still open. You can keep only one Chinook and a Coho. Or, two silvers. The Ocean has been pretty bad. Just allot of wind chop and very sloppy. So, many of the smaller boats didn't get out. But the few that did, didn't have a very good report. They said the fish were scattered and just plain hard to fish in the conditions out there. Hopefully the ocean will calm down. At this point, it seems many of the fish are starting to come into the river. So. it's sort of a coin toss as to where you should fish. Either fish in the river where you know there is fish or try and fish the ocean and try to find where they are now.
August 26th 2007 - - -Unfortunately they
closed the Ocean Salmon fishery Saturday at Midnight. Why at
midnight? You can only fish one hour before sun rise and one hour after.
The Ocean fishery has been red hot!! Just when most of the smaller
boats could go out and catch fish, they close the darn ocean. Not fair!
So, now it's on with the river fishery. And let me tell you, it's been a
mixed bag of reports. I know they have caught fish on both sides of the
river. Usually on the turn of the tide. The fresh Herring seem to be the
best to use for bait. The spinners just aren't working to good yet.
Maybe in a week or so. Hear that the fish are real deep this year.
Weighed in a 40 pound Chinook that was caught in the river. He was using
FRESH HERRING, and he bought his bait at Tackle Time.
August 19th 2007 - - - The last few days the Ocean Salmon moved south by seven miles or so. The reports now, are that they have moved back by the CR buoy (Columbia River entrance buoy) Much better than having to run south. Limits are still common. Today, the weather conditions are very good. Seas at 2 to 4ft. With little or no wind. Tomorrow looks pretty good too.
I'm starting to hear of more fish being caught in the river. Still no shoot out, but at least there is fish to catch. With some of the rain showers we've had, it may bring in a few more fish in the river. Heard they have been catching Chinook right off the saw dust pile. On the flood. Yes, you do have to throw them back. But in the next few days, You'll be able to keep them. Starting August 22nd you can keep one Chinook and one Coho. Or you can keep two Coho. Should be a very good fishery the last two weeks in August. And September will have some nice big Coho. Also, the crabbing should be pretty good.
August 14th 2007 - - - The Ocean fishery is still excellent! You don't have to travel as far as you did last year. Their fishing between buoy 2 and 4. And traveling south. About five miles or so. Using fresh anchovies and herring. The fishery is just like the "old days" You have your limit before your ready to stop fishing. But that's a good problem to have.
The Tuna are still producing well. Some days are better than others. But that's just plain fishing. They have been fishing just past the Halibut holes. About 28 to 30 miles out. The last Tuna trip which was August 13th, they had a very nice quality of fish. About a twenty pound average. They are scheduled to go for Tuna again in the morning. The weather is just gorgeous! And the sea conditions are good for their trip.
August 9th 2007 - - -Ocean Salmon fishing has been outstanding. Just about everybody is catching their limits. Some days there are allot of unclipped Coho with maybe a few smaller Chinook. Then you go out the next day and catch all unclipped Coho and no Chinook. I've heard some of the Chinook is in the neighbor hood of 20 pounds or so. Guess we'll have to wait until August 22nd to keep any Chinook in the river. Right now there is a few fish in the river. But not in any numbers. Heard that a boat fishing just off the saw dust pile caught 13 Chinook and two finned Coho. None of which he could keep but at least there is some fish around. The ocean fishery remains the best fishery! Most are fishing just between buoy 2 and 4. Some days a little South. Doesn't seem like anyone has had any problem finding fish to catch. They are using fresh Anchovies and Herring. Both seem to work well. Just hear from the Lady Dee and they are already on their way home with limits for everyone.
August 4th 2007 - - -There's nothing like fishing for Tuna! They had their first Tuna within minutes. Two fish on! Four fish on! six fish on! They ended yesterday with 50 fish. All on rod and reel.
Ocean Salmon has been very good. Not too many Chinook though. The Coho are running about six to eight pounds now. And they are catching fish between buoy two and four.
50 Tuna August 3rd
July 31st 2007 - - -Ocean Salmon fishing has been real good. They are catching fish between buoy 2 and 4. Last year the fish were miles down south. But this year the fish are near the entrance. You'll save a little fuel too! Sounds like the better bite has been an early morning bite. So, get out there and catch some fish as early as you can. Because the afternoon winds always seem to come up. Limits have been taken early. Most all the fish that have been caught, have been all Coho. With a Chinook here and there. Either fresh Anchovies or Herring have been working. Tomorrow is the opening of Buoy 10. From the numbers of fish just outside, the river should have some fish in it. The Tuna report is still VERY GOOD !
July 24th 2007 - - - Albacore Tuna ! Yesterday was a GREAT day. They left the dock with 10 passengers heading out towards the Tuna grounds. After about two hours, Captain Gene Kane decided that it's time to put the gear in the water. They were gearing up the second rod when the first rod started bending over. FISH ON! I was told it took over an hour to get all the rods in the water at the same time. They had doubles and quads on at the same time. How fun! They were approximately 32 miles straight out. And they were using swim baits. I sent my video camera along, hoping to get some good video of their fishing trip. They did get some video, but were too busy catching fish !! Total count was 65 fish !
July 11th 2007 - - - July 1st was the opening of our Ocean Salmon. This year, the fish were found just past the CR buoy. The last buoy out there. (Columbia River Entrance Buoy) Unlike last year, they had to travel way down South to catch fish. So this year is looking real good. The fish are about 5 to 7 pounds. Which is real good for this early in July. We've had a few foul weather patterns come in and it kept most fishermen off the water. But the next couple of days look pretty good. Here's a few pictures of the Ocean Salmon. All fish were caught on Anchovies.
June 29th 2007 - - - Sturgeon fishing is coming to an end. The fishery will close July 4th at mid-night. It's been a good fishery this year. Today's catch on the Lady Dee was great. They got several short fish along with a few that were missed. The people were happy and that's what's important. Now, we're looking forward to the opener of Ocean Salmon. Which is this Sunday, July 1st 2007.
June 25th 2007 - - - Here's today's catch! They had seven fish by 9:30 this morning. But with the weak tides, they struggled the rest of the day. Still a great day of fishing. Heard that the late tide in the afternoon has been producing real good.
June 25th 2007- - - Sturgeon fishing has been very good. For the most part. With a day here and there that didn't produce as well. The bait of choice is still the FRESH anchovies and Sand Shrimp. The fish are on the move. So there really isn't any particular spot. With these smaller tides, the bait biters are out to feed. Making it hard to keep bait on your hook. You either have to fish right through them or move to another spot. Here's another picture from the Lady Dee on June 23rd.
June 17th 2007 - - - Yesterday was the BIG Sturgeon derby! There was a ton of fisherman. Boats everywhere! Unfortunately the catching wasn't too good. From what we've heard, there was a pretty good bite early morning and then late in the afternoon. Most were caught on the flood. Here's a picture of the people who fished on the Lady Dee. They caught the first four fish on the ebb and then the rest of the fish on the flood. Just below the bridge. They were using fresh anchovies and sand shrimp.
June 13th 2007 - - - Heard just this morning, that there was a good bite just up river from the Skipanon. The bait of choice is FRESH Anchovies and Sand Shrimp. From the looks of the bait list, the orders are a little bit more heavy on fresh anchovies and a bit lighter on the sand shrimp. There is a big Sturgeon derby this weekend. Saturday June 16th .This is put on by Southwest Washington Anglers. Please remember to order your FRESH bait for this weekend. We'll have FRESH anchovies and FRESH sand shrimp.
June 12th 2007 - - - Sturgeon fishing has been good the last few weeks. Fishing at Tongue Point has been a good fishery for those who can get up into the shallow waters. But not very consistent if you can't get into those shallow places. There has also been a good bite just in front of Astoria. But that also is an on and off bite. That's pretty much sums up Sturgeon fishing so far this year.
June 11th 2007 - - - Well, it did rain. But the fishing was pretty good. Not everybody did well. But enough did to say it was good fishing. There were so many people it's hard to say where everybody was fishing. There was a ton of people in the John Day area. Didn't sound like it was any better than down below here. With all the cell phone now days, it's hard to get any kind of fishing report. All top secret!
June 6th 2007 - - - Just a reminder that June 9th and 10th is a FREE fishing weekend. No license or tags are required. I just checked and found out this also includes shellfish! Which is really nice. I don't think shellfish was included last year. Can't remember back that far. Looks like the weather is going to be a little rainy. But, don't think it will be too bad. Please remember to order your FRESH bait for this weekend. You can order over the phone or stop by and see us and we'll get your bait ordered. Have a great weekend!
